How to Make a Bigger Turn on the Backswing

Your stance has a lot to with the length of your backswing. There are two aspects to the stance that determines the length of your backswing.

1. Toes
2. Width of the stance

Wider stance may look like it will give you more power. But unless you have a flexible body, stance that's too wide will restrict your turn.

So for most amateurs, it might be better to take narrower stance than the pros to turn more. This will give you more power.

Let's talk about your toes.

For experiment, let’s do the following.

1. Stand up straight with your right toe pointing inside (left)
2. Now try to turn right
3. Next, flare out your right toe
4. Try to turn right

I guess you were able to turn more to the right with flared right toe.

Some pros have their right toe perpendicular to the target line for more control. But I don't recommend this approach for amateurs.

Please see the related posts below for more details about the toes and stance.
